Digi Awards 2016

For the past term I had been working on an entry for the 2016 Digital Awards run by Core Education. The Digi Awards are a competition where you enter digitally from 5 categories. I chose Website Creation and the theme this year was 'Be the change' so I started thinking. My teacher Mr Bush and IT person Karen Jeffrey helped me think and we came to a decision. We are 'The Young Enviro Warriors.' A young enviro warrior is somebody who cares for their environment and shares a video with us. Recently, we all have been to the prize giving and Connor and I got first for both entries! If you want to check it out the link is below.

The Shortest Day of The Year

Today is the shortest day of the year for the Southern Hemisphere.

The shortest day is scheduled to occur at 10.34am today, when the sun’s position in the sky reaches its farthest point north of the Equator. It means today will have the least amount of daylight of any day for the year.

In Auckland, this equates to just nine hours, 37 minutes and 58 seconds, and in Invercargill, just eight hours, 35 minutes and 5 seconds worth of daylight.

Starting tomorrow, the days in the Southern Hemisphere will start to get longer and the moon larger, as the South Pole begins to tilt towards the sun.

However, temperatures around New Zealand are likely to be higher than usual.

During the Winter Solstice, there is no sunlight at all south of the Antarctic Circle – they have 24 hours of darkness. However, if you want to experience a day with no sunset will have to head to the Arctic Circle where the sun will remain overhead for a full 24 hours!

In the Northern Hemisphere today is extra special as it coincides with a full moon. This is the first time since 1948. This won’t happen again until 2062!

My OTJs

I hope you enjoy my writings I have mad previously this year.

Bang! Crash! Weeo Weeo! Is all I hear as the ground starts to rumble. All of a sudden I can hear buildings falling down from a mile away. It is dusty and I can barley see. I am at Selwyn House Preschool and all my teachers were in the turtle. This was the most tragic thing that has happened to me EVER!!!!! All the children at my preschool went to the school next to us and I am taken to my Dad where I am shivering in fear as well as everyone around me including my parents. My sister and Dad are standing outside in fear. I remember my Dad ringing everybody he knew but the phone line was dead. My Dad's principal was away that day so Dad was in charge of everyone. My family wasn't able to do anything on be anywhere until the last child and teacher left the school grounds. Well we were waiting we got some yummy food from the hostel like chocolate buttons and things like that. When we left the traffic was not as bad as it was so we were home in about 20 minutes. We got home and cleaned up the mess that had happened like some broken glass and picked up 2 speakers. We also picked up my draws that fell down and a big bookcase in the playroom. Olivia and I went to bed after we cleaned up because we had been up for ages and we were exhausted.

“I am sorry but we are going to crash land”. The pilots says as we are rocking in the plane. I am the first person to jump out instead of dying and I feel like I am flying. The scenery is beautiful because we were just above the glacier falls. The waterfalls were like custard running down a beautiful custard square. I decide that it is hot enough for a swim and hover to the left to land on the glistening cold water.

People told me that colourful waterfalls were just a myth, but boy do I have a tale to tell. It all began when I was in the jungle with some friends of mine and we were playing hide and seek. Stupidly I was walking backwards to find them and after about 5 seconds my foot slipped off the edge. I was falling down and down, and I thought it wouldn't stop until a white fluffy cloud lifted me back up. I realised I had just fallen into the centre of the earth. The cloud pushed me up to the top again. When I hit to the top I looked around at the amazing view. There were colourful fluffy waterfalls for miles!

The next day I was still stranded in the beautiful waterfall and jungle. I decided to go for an early morning swim in the waterfall. I dive into the water head first and everything goes black. I have hit my head on a rock in the waterfall. When I wake up I am lying wet as anything on the warm hot sand. I stand up and decide to build some shelter because it is late and it looks like it might rain. I grab tons of sand and start making a ginormous sand castle. To keep me company I make wee Winnie the Pooh character sculptures including Piglet and Tiger. It was really dark before I had finished so I shoved into the tiny door, when I got in it was like a huge palace, but made of sand of course. After looking around I got into my sand bed and fell fast asleep.

After a cold night in my sand castle I decided I would go out on a morning walk along the beach. I walked out of the castle and as soon as I walked I out I noticed the beach had turned into a forest lake! It was a scorching hot day so I decided to go and lay under a tree. I stayed there for about a minute until I realised the juiciest peach was hanging from the tree. I picked it and ate it. After eating it, I had a feeling that I wanted to climb the tree, so I did. I got to the top and pulled a branch out of the way to see the view and found something beautiful….. What looked like Narnia!!!!

Shiver Shiver. I am stranded on a island with a freezing chill. It is snowing and all I have for shelter is a tiny dead tree with snow covering the whole thing. This is a story of how I got stranded out here………
I was walking beside the beautiful lake, when I tripped over a rock and fell right into the boat on the lake. It started to move and about five seconds later I was drifting away down the lake. I must have accidently knocked the rope off the hook when I slipped in. So there I was drifting down the stream. There were no oars so I tried using my hands as one. The current was too strong so it just pulled me instead of me pulling it. I try to remain calm, but as I am I notice a strong splashing noise up ahead. I looked up to see what the noise was, straight away I realised I was heading for the waterfall of doom!!!!

On your marks get set goooooooo!!!! I pull the sails up on my boat and start racing. I am in the New Zealand sailing team and we are racing at the London Olympics. We are in the lead. I can feel the wind blowing through my hair and drips of water setting into my skin. It is a scorching hot day and I am in my singlet and shorts with the team logo on them. For some reason we are in the lead by quite a bit and we can't see anybody else behind us. I look back at my teammates and see there faces have a huge sneaky grin on it. I ask them why they are grinning they tell that they have put diesel into all the boats when they said they would put 95 in. So the engines blew up. That's cheating I says I dive into the freezing but refreshing water to go and help all the other teams. It is a bit of a swim back but I managed it. I went and told everybody not to panic because there were extra ones in the cabin next to each teams set up area. I gave them the keys to each cabin and they went off to grab their new boats. But they were taking forever when they were only getting the boats out of a huge cabin. Out of the corner of my eye I saw all of my teammates split up and grab the keys from each team and locked them in the cabin with a mighty SLAM!!! I was then knocked out and out in my on one as well. We had been PLAYED.

The story begins with something magical, something awesome. A lama. I am a cleaner at the Auckland Petting Zoo and I am doing my show for the first time. I sucked at cleaning but I was great at talking so I was put to this job. “And now the spectacular lama!!!” The lama is put out of his field and was looking at everybody weirdly. He then showed his ugly yellow teeth. He then, without me knowing came up behind me and kicked me into the water below! “Splash!” The audience then looked at him for ages in silence with a weird sort of look, before he said awkwardly.    “SUP?”

We be in Rome Ma lady. I had just landed into Rome and been picked up to go to my hotel when we suddenly went out of control and crashed into a spiral staircase! I thought that I would be gutted this happened but it took me by surprise. It was very inspiring. There were bits of plants and leaves on it and it was about 50-Storeys high. 21/3/16 I got out of the car with a good feeling when I realised I hadn't been hurt. I got out and nearly tripped over the edge, luckily I Was saved by a rock on the edge. But then the taxi driver opened his door and I was pushed over the edge. Ahhh! I was falling to my death.

As I was falling to my death it seemed to be getting colder, until I went too far and SPLASH! I landed surprisingly in a deep blue sea. It was really deep but I managed to float. It was surprising how many dead people were down here. The sea creatures were amazing and tropical. I started sinking to the bottom and stopped suddenly, I had been stung…..

"Wahoo!!!!!! I feel so alive!"  I am flying over the track on the biggest roller coaster in Texas!!! It is the most scariest, but fun experience of my life.........
The whole thing started when I was reading the newspaper one morning and I saw an ad that said you could win a trip for 2 to the world's biggest and scariest roller coaster. All you had to do was tell them why you deserved this once in a lifetime trip. I thought to myself, this couldn't be that hard, could it? So I got onto my computer and opened Word Documents. If I had this trip it began........
It was midday by the time I had officially sent the letter into the competition. And now all I can do is hope. The draw was going to be tomorrow, so I had a day to keep waiting. Before I knew it, morning had come and I turned on the TV because they announced the winner on the morning news. They just announced the headlines and told us that they would be announcing the winner at 9:15am. The time now was only 8:00 so I still had a good hour before it would be announced. Time flew and by the time I had had a shower and eaten, they announced the winner! "Jeffrey Hopgood" the reporter exclaimed. My heart sunk, Jeffrey Hopgood was my best friend! And the ad did say that this experience was for two so I was crossing my fingers that he would take me and of course he did, otherwise I wouldn't be sharing this story and I would be sitting on my sofa crying while stress eating. Now back to the present..........
I am on the roller coaster and am just about to go underwater but I then thought to myself roller coaster song go underwater! The track was ending what would we do and why was there no track?

"Mmmmmmm the smell of fresh fruit and vegetables tickling my nose.” My friend Hutchy and I were on our farm picking some fruit and vegetables for the week. It was a beautiful blue sky with wisps of cloud glistening in the sky. We had nearly finished picking our fruit when we heard he something, it sounded like a shriek for help.

“Wow! Look at that sky. It's filled with all different shades of purple and orange.” I am flying in the air with my friend on an aeroplane to Los Angeles. We were going for my 10th birthday. Because of that we were in first class. The roof was a see through glass so we could see the sky above us. “We are going to crash land!” I hear the pilot say with a screech. My friend and I didn't stress yet because we had parachute underneath our seats instead of the life jackets the rest of the people have. So my friend and I were going to jump out just before we hit the rocks that were on the edge of a beach. T was about five minutes later we put our parachutes on and jumped out of the plane and just as we were going to hit the ground with a bump we pulled on our parachutes and lifted up with a huge gush of air pushing us higher and higher. My friend and I knew how to stare the parachute because my Grandad had taught us when we were younger, it was like floating on a cloud. We didn't really care about the rest of the expel because they were so far down they looked like an ant.

My Report Of Waitākiri School

Waitākiri Primary School has 627 students that are from Year 0-6. Waitakiri School has a lot of opportunities for all the students, and is a modern learning environment. It is located on the eastern side of Christchurch.

Waitakiri is a brand new school and has lots of advantages because of this. One of the advantages is our new learning studios. There are so many things we can do like, learn with each other and meet new people. It is a great learning space because we have these things called breakout spaces, which are on the side of the studios. We can use them in all different ways like, working in a quiet space if the common area is too noisy. There are 3 breakout spaces. We have the Media Zone, which is the quiet corner and where the green screen is, to film all different types of things. We also have the Silent Room which is a space where we go to learn if we just want some quiet time. The last breakout space is the Collaboration Station which is the most common breakout space because the space is where we all meet and discuss what's happening next and we also sing songs. Another advantage to us is that the students have 4 teachers in the studio and the teachers all have different strengths, and ways of teaching. The kitchen is in the corner of the studios and not only do we use it for cooking, we also use it as a learning space for some of us. We are also very lucky because we have lots of technology in our learning space which is quite handy for people who don't bring their own iPads. We have all different types of technology like Computers, TVs and IPads, which are used lots in the studios.

The culture we have at Waitākiri is amazing. There are so many different types of people from all different types of cultures. The most common are European and Māori, but there are all different types here at Waitākiri. We take culture here really seriously and the teachers want us to learn as much about it as possible. We are taught this by, putting Māori word labels on most of the things around our school, and we have even named our eating area after a Māori word, Te Ao Marama, which means the place of light. On a Monday we do Te Reo and Kapa Haka which is a great way to be exposed to the language. Our teachers also greet us in Māori and give us simple commands and are given the option to learn Mandarin and French.

We have so many Opportunities at Waitākiri. All the students from Year 0 up get a chance to involve themselves in at least something. Some of the opportunities Waitākiri has to offer are, Chess Club, Enviro FERNS, Jump Jam, Hagley Sports, dance crew, gardening club, tinkering with tools and Camp the options are endless, there is something for everyone at this school.

In conclusion Waitākiri School have brand new learning studios that meet a huge variety of needs and abilities. The Culture of the school is important and value by the students and teachers offering a variety of languages. The opportunities are vast and there is something for everyone. We hope to see you soon at Waitākiri School.
